In short
Instagram now shows each eligible post to a small group of non-followers first, so a good reel can travel whatever your follower count.
Watch time, likes and sends are the signals that matter most, and sends weigh more with people who do not follow you yet.
Original content gets recommended; reposting other people's work can take your account out of recommendations altogether.
Hashtags are capped at five and help people find you in search, but they do not increase reach on their own.
Trial reels let you test new ideas on non-followers before your own audience sees them.

Growing on Instagram without buying followers or using bots comes down to two things: creative content people want to watch and share, and a real community around it. This guide shows you how to grow Instagram followers with organic, creative content, updated for what Instagram changed in 2025: how it ranks reels, the five-hashtag limit, longer reels and trial reels.
Every platform change below comes from Instagram itself or from reputable press, listed at the foot of the page. If you are a brand looking for creators rather than a creator looking for followers, see our influencer and talent campaigns.
Before the tactics, it helps to know how a post finds new people. In February 2025 Instagram said it had finished the ranking changes it first announced in April 2024. Each eligible reel is now shown to a small audience of people who may enjoy it, whether or not they follow you. The best performers are then shown to progressively wider groups, so distribution depends on engagement rather than follower count.
Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, said in January 2025 that the top three ranking signals are watch time, likes and sends. Likes count slightly more with people who already follow you, and sends count slightly more with people who do not. For organic growth, that means making things people want to watch to the end and pass on to a friend.
Your niche is the area your content focuses on. A narrower focus lets you make content for a specific audience and sets you apart from accounts doing everything at once. Work out who you want to reach and what they want from you before you plan a single post.
Then make your profile a clear first impression.
Profile picture A sharp, recognisable image that suits your work
Bio Who you are and what you do, in a line or two and in your own voice
Link Your website, portfolio or other channels, so interest turns into traffic
Grid Since January 2025 the profile grid shows posts as tall rectangles rather than squares, so check how your covers and photos crop
Instagram's own advice to creators, published in February 2025, is plain:
Hook people early Grab attention in the first three seconds, and watch your View Rate in Insights to see whether it works
Make sense to strangers A reel should be understandable to someone who has never seen your account
Add audio To reels, and to photos and carousels too
Keep experimenting Reach is unpredictable, and each post is another chance to find new people
Reels can now run to three minutes, up from 90 seconds, which leaves room for tutorials, behind-the-scenes and longer stories.
Keep it original
Instagram recommends only the original when it finds identical copies, and labels the copies with a link to the creator. Accounts that post other people's content 10 or more times in 30 days, without materially changing it, become ineligible for recommendations. Visible watermarks also make a post ineligible, so export clean files rather than reposting from another app.

Filming a reel on a phone
Trial reels, launched in December 2024, let you try an idea on people who do not follow you before your own audience sees it. Switch on the trial toggle before you publish. The reel stays off your grid and out of your followers' feeds and is recommended to non-followers instead, though a follower could still come across it elsewhere, such as in a message.
After 24 hours you can check its views, shares, likes and comments. Instagram notes that trial content can take longer to gain traction, so give it time before you judge it. Use trials for new formats, a different tone or a subject outside your usual niche.
In December 2025 Instagram said it would gradually cut the number of hashtags allowed in a post or reel caption to five, down from 30. Its advice is to use a few targeted hashtags rather than many generic ones.
Mosseri has said hashtags do not increase reach. They help people find your post through search and topic pages, so pick tags someone interested in your niche would actually look up, and leave out catch-alls such as #reels or #explore.
Goals give growth a direction. Make them SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. "More followers" is a wish; "10% more followers by the end of next month" is something you can track and adjust.
Instagram tells creators to post consistently, because each reel is another chance to reach a new audience. Work out how often you can make good content and keep to it. A steady few posts a week beats a burst of daily posts followed by weeks of silence. Stories between posts keep you in front of the people who already follow you, with personality and behind-the-scenes moments.
Instagram is a social platform, so be social.
Reply Answer comments, messages and mentions promptly and genuinely
Start conversations Ask questions in captions, and use polls and question stickers in Stories
Go Live Talk to followers in real time, and keep the replay up for those who missed it
Collaborate Team up with creators or brands in your niche who share your audience: joint posts, takeovers or a shared giveaway put you in front of people who are likely to follow you
Smaller creators in your niche are a good place to start, since their audiences are often close-knit and engaged.
Mosseri's advice is to watch three numbers in Insights: average watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach. Add View Rate for your hooks, and look at which posts bring in new followers.
Review them every few weeks. Do more of what people watch and share, and drop what they scroll past. Brands are looking at these numbers too; YouTube's creator search test is one sign of how closely. Knowing yours makes the first brand conversation much easier.
